If QSB could get one big player (I’m thinking Things or something like that) to write a plugin for QSB I think it could move forward. People would love that sort of option.
It may not be an answer to the rest of your problems with QSB but Cultured Code has made a Things plugin for QSB which is available here. They also have plugins for Quicksilver and Launchbar.
